3-D Smile Design in Daily Clinical Practice:

From Wishful Thinking to Precise Treatment Outcome

27-29 October 2022

Treatment planning is considered a pillar in clinical practice that dictates the success or failure of the procedure's outcome. The increasing patient demand for esthetic solutions aligned with the social media cosmetic trend pushed several companies to launch new esthetic materials/devices to respond to patient needs and dentist demands.

Digital dentistry represents a new way to diagnose, treatment plan, and create functional esthetic restorations. Digital smile design is the starting point for improving diagnosis and making an appropriate decision while avoiding irreversible teeth preparation when not needed. The motivational smile design software offered by several companies remains a 2D design that in many cases is not applicable in reproducing the generated smile in an actual situation.

3D Smile design is an efficient method to plan, help in materials selection, and test-drive the selected treatment before moving clinically to an “irreversible” procedure.

A Dental Mock-up is generated out of the smile design and used clinically (3D printed shells or models) in the initial phase of the treatment, and is irreplaceable for clinical and aesthetic evaluation. It is a powerful tool that allows the dentist to involve patients in their treatment from wishful thinking to precise treatment outcome that reflects their reality.

An innovative smile design tool is available that strengthens the diagnostic view, improves communication, and increases predictability of the treatment outcome by combining patient files in one place and using them as a guide for the entire esthetic procedure. The design software is used in restorative dentistry as well as in full-mouth implant-based rehabilitation.

This seminar will discuss smile design solutions to facilitate the dentist/ lab communication workflow from smile planning to facially guide dental mock-ups suggested and executed that have the least promise gap. Fabrication of digital mockups, preparation, and cementation guides will be presented, as well as the 3D printing of several materials related to the smile design.

Learning Objectives:

  • Principles of Smile Design and Facial analysis
  • Dental photography and videos
  • Patient digitization
  • Learn how to create Digital Mockups within minutes using a frontal facial picture, an intra-oral scan, and your patient’s Facial Scan.
  • Basics of 3D printing and materials needed for the process
